I was woken up early one spring morning by a … cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep. I looked up, and on the branch above me were 2 little baby birds, who had lost their Mummy. They were chirping away to each other, saying, “I wonder where she’s gone?” Then one of them flew on to the bark of a tree to see if it could spot her, but after a struggle to hang on, it fell down on to the ground.

Oh, Mummy where have
you gone to?

Then a lady was walking along the footpath that runs through our field.

They flew on to her thumb and asked her, if she knew where their Mummy was.

She said, “I have no idea.”

Excuse me please, lady, but have you seen our mummy?

Help, I’m stuck

Ouch

“Maybe she’s gone to see her friends or perhaps to find a new boy friend or even gone to visit Grand Ma and Grand Pa.”

I think I’ll jump on the tree

Oh, there you are

Now, not only had it lost it’s Mummy but it’s little brother too, but not for long, they were soon reunited.

Now let’s go and start looking for Mummy again.

After a short rest they were up again flying from flower to flower, bush to bush getting more and more worried, but they were also very hungry and still too young to find worms for themselves.

Mummy!

They both thought that they were about to be eaten by a cat

But luckily for them, it spotted a rabbit and chased after that instead.

I’m tired now.

Then suddenly we all heard a “Meow! Meow!”

The poor little birds were so frightened.

Mummy!

They were so relieved to see her again and asked her
 where she’d been.

She said, “I’ve just been to see my friends, I’m sorry I took so long.”

Mummy!

Once the cat had gone, they started calling for Mummy again and their cries got louder and louder, and then she heard them calling her and flew back to her two babies.

It’s alright. I’m here.

I’m going to take you now to show you how to get your own worms, you’re old enough to learn.” They were really hungry and thirsty so thought that was a good idea. They are now all grown up and fending for themselves and very happy.
